Environmental Design Stage 1

Hey guys,

I wanna say thank you to Jimmy and Keith who helped out this morning to erect the web. Here are a few pictures of it thus far:

I left some of my bugs with our manifesto on them. I also left some safety pins to hanging from the web for anyone who wants to hang their bugs up.

STAGE 2: We're going tonight to take pictures of the web with my LED lights. That'll be our transition. I know it's gonna be tight! If you wanna come, call me! i've e-mailed you all my number.

I'll post up a MAP later on how to get to the web later.

Song ideaS!

I really like the song ideas!!! HEre is my vote for a song, there is alot of meaning to it!
this is how it works
It feels a little worse
Than when we drove our hearse
Right through that screaming crowd

While laughing up a storm
Until we were just bone
Until it got so warm
That none of us could sleep

And all the Styrofoam
Began to melt away
We tried to find some words
To aid in the decay

But none of them were home
Inside their catacomb
A million ancient bees
Began to sting our knees

While we were on our knees
Praying that disease
Would leave the ones we love
And never come again

On the radio
We heard, 'November Rain'
That solo's really long
But it's a pretty song
We listened to it twice
'Case the DJ was asleep

This is how it works
You're young until you're not
You love until you don't
You try until you can't

You laugh until you cry
You cry until you laugh
And everyone must breathe
Until their dying breath

No, this is how it works
You peer inside yourself
You take the things you like
And try to love the things you took

And then you take that love you made
And stick it into some
Someone else's heart
Pumping someone else's blood

And walking arm in arm
You hope it don't get harmed
But even if it does
You'll just do it all again

And on the radio
You hear, 'November Rain'
That solo's awful long
But it's a good refrain
You listen to it twice
'Cause the DJ is asleep

On the radio, on the radio
On the radio, uh oh, on the radio, uh oh
On the radio, uh oh, on the radio

Kyle!

Web/ Meeting Time

Hey, if you didn't get the e-mail and checked on here:

Meet Tomorrow (5/17) at 2nd Stage (class) and we'll walk to the location from there.

Be there by 11:00 am. I left my number in the e-mail if you need to call me.

_____
Web

wow jimmy, the web looks awesome!!!! i love it. You did a great job. I can pick it up from you tomorrow unless you've already found someone else.

Allie, lights would be awesome! I have like twenty LED finger lights i can place on the web and inside the bugs as well.

See you all tomorrow.

Sounds okay if you can get the lights to light up somehow, with batteries? Are you talking like christmas lights or what? Also, who's putting up the web?

New twist to the enviroment desgin?

So I was thinking about the bugs I was going to make for the web (lady bugs, btw) and I though it would be really cool to stick some lights inside of them and then come photograph it at night. This would also give it a light/dark transition which alan seems fond of (given the requirements for the other two designs) does this sound appealing to anyone else?

Web

Oh and just use the extra string to tie it to the tree. Take some scissors and cut the string to connect parts of the web to the branches. i would put the strings on it but i don't know how much slack you'll need and haven't seen the tree's position.

Spidey Web

-jimmy wagner

Hey Ten Right angles,
i decided that since i didn't want to do any work that i would just do this web spider thingy because i have nothing better to do. SO here are some pictures.

*PLEASE READ*: Hopefully someone can pick this up who will be going on sunday to put it up as i might not be. i'm at college ten.

The middle is kind of a mess because i was still figuring out how to do it, but just put one of the big spiders or something there and it will cover it up.
I tried using knots first, but that failed once i realized that the spool of string would be inconvenient to tie knots. So i went with tape. i hope it holds and i hope it's not too bad.

i started out by just taping the middle of each of the 5 strings to the circle as straight as i could.
i then taped down the ends, and started wrapping the string on the web starting in the middle.

This is the 360 degree circle that i used to evenly spread out the strings. Making two crosses with 4 strings didn't tickle my fancy, so i went with 5 strings, meaning about 72 degrees between each which made it a little bit harder, but looks better i think.

At about this point i was like, "Holy shit this just might actually work."
You can see the middle paper, which was the protractor to make the lines evenly spaced. Also, the tape used to tape down the ends of the strings.

And here's the end result:

Oh and sorry about the quality of the photos. They are from my crappy phone.

Some Doodles

Hey all,
So Alan was talking about how drawing is good to see where your mind is, so I thought I'd post some recent doodles from my moleskin. I didn't intend to make these look like anything in particular, but I think one has kind of turned into a bird.

Interview Questions and Designs

Hey hey,

For whoever is doing the interview...here's my questions:

1.) What inspired you to be part of this search?

2.) When you originally came to college, was searching for extraterrestrial life your dream, or did you have another dream as a freshman in college?

3.) If we do find intelligent life outside of our planet, and we had a means of communicating with them (through Radio clicks, lights, whatever...) , what would be the first message conveyed to them?

First off, thank you to whoever is doing the interview. This is an awesome opportunity that a very few get.

Second, I'll design my piece for the environmental design (bug, whatever) on Monday/Tuesday. Is it alright if we keep it up that long? I don't want to be "stepping" on anyone's toes (mainly UCSC grounds...they have chainsaws, and those scare me).

But yeah, that's it. I'll see y'all on Tuesday.

-Matt
